Physical & Chemical Changes

Lesson

Rationale:

Students witness chemistry happening in their everyday life but usually fail to recognize and appreciate it. Students generally have an easier time understanding concepts when they are made relative to students' lives. Using this idea and the creative aspect of photography I thought to create an activity that would incorporate these two concepts, which we normally would not do in class. Students are able to express their artistic side through pictures, collages, etc. Our world has beautiful science occurring every day, let's gain the ability to recognize it, in particular, physical and chemical changes for this activity

Assessment:

This is a formative assessment. Students will submit at least six photos depicting a physical or chemical change. Students must also be able to state which change has occurred for each picture.

Nova Scotia Curriculum Outcomes

Grade 10 Science, Physical Chemistry Unit: Chemical Reactions:

117-5 Provide examples of how science and technology are an integral part of their lives and their community

WHMIS Lesson

Rationale:

Why not have when learning about lab safety! TikTok is popular in high school, so take advantage of that and use it as a formative assessment. Students can even get their household to join in on this assignment.

More minds = More creativity

This can help lighten this heavy worksheet unit and perhaps the boredom of quarantine.

Assessment:

This is a formative assessment; however, they will need this knowledge since WHMIS is required for all labs (high school and university). TikTok is a great platform for students. It is easy to use and has many tools that students can take advantage of to reach new heights with their creative output.

Nova Scotia Curriculum Outcomes

Grade 10 Science, Physical Chemistry Unit: Chemical Reactions:

114-8 Describe the usefulness of scientific nomenclature systems

116-3 Identify examples where technologies were developed based on scientific understanding

117-5 Provide examples of how science and technology are an integral part of their lives and their community

213-9 Demonstrate a knowledge of WHMIS standards by selecting and applying proper techniques for handling and disposing of lab materials

Careers & Chemistry Lesson

Rationale:

A general misconception about chemistry is that you only need to take Chemistry 11 and 12 if you plan on taking a Chemistry degree. This is false! You will be surprised at how many occupations require a good chemistry foundation. Students can also learn which high school courses they will need for their desired career path.

Assessment:

This is a summative assessment based project. Students are expected to answer eight questions and present their answers in an entertaining fashion.

Nova Scotia Curriculum Outcomes

Grade 10 Science, Physical Chemistry Unit: Chemical Reactions:

117-7 Identify and describe science- and technology-based careers related to the science they are studying
